Setup mobile phone contract
There are two main types of mobile phone service; pay-as-you-go and monthly contract.
For those who are staying in the UK for more than a year or frequently love keeping in touch with others, it is highly recommended to apply for a monthly contract for their mobile phone services.
Normal contract tends to last between one to one and half year, and you will have to pay a fixed subscription fee per month (i.e. £25-35) until it expires - failure to do so may result in a legal action and poor your credit rating. The £35 price band usually includes a free handset* and a monthly usage allowance of 600 minutes or more per se. The free minutes would allow you to call other mobiles from any network service providers (Vodafone, Orange, O2, Virgin Mobile, Three, etc) anytime of the day, free of charge! If the allowance is exceeded, substantial charges may apply (especially when a call is cross network e.g. (O2 to Orange)). Calls to the same mobile phone network are cheaper and there are different rates between the evening, weekend and daytime calls.
*The higher the monthly subscription fee you pay, the cheaper a handset will become. In most cases, they are usually free!
Masters or exchange students who are likely to study here for a year or less, or have minimal need for mobile phone usage, then the "pay-as-you-go" may be more cost-effective option. Users are charged per minute and are in-charged of their own allowance. Credit topup can be made at one's convenience, whether it's online, over the phone or through a top-up voucher. There is no free handset that comes with this option though. So, if you want to save some money, bring your handset from Thailand with you - make sure that your handset supports at least duo band.
To set up a mobile phone contract, you have to go to a phone shop, e.g. Vodafone or Orange, with your bank statement, utilities bills and a form of ID (passport or UK driving license). Eligibility for a contract depends on several factors; such as your credit rating or how long you have been in the country. For the pay-as-you-go option, you can simply buy a phone with a sim-card from a phone shop. Alternatively you just buy a standalone sim-card or order one online (which are sometimes free).
In any case, do your homework so that you get the best deal available which suits your usage.

สำหรับท่านที่อยู่ในสหราชอาณาจักรนานกว่า 1 ปี หรือใช้โทรศัพท์เยอะ ระบบนี้ก็อาจเป็นตัวเลือกที่เหมาะสมสำหรับท่าน บริการส่วนใหญ่มักจะมีสัญญายาวประมาณ 1 ปี ถึง ปีครึ่งและท่านจะต้องจ่ายค่าบริการรายเดือนในอัตราคงที่ เช่น 25-35 ปอนด์ต่อเดือนจนกว่าจะหมดสัญญา หากไม่ปฏิบัติตามก็อาจจะถูกดำเนินคดีตามกฎหมายและลดอันดับความน่าเชื่อถือของท่านได้ โดยปรกติค่าใช้จ่ายรายเดือน 35 ปอนด์จะมากับตัวเครื่องมือถือ*และโปรโมชั่นโทรฟรี 600 นาทีเป็นอย่างตํ่า คุณสามารถใช้โปรโมชั่นโทรฟรีนี้โทรหาโทรศัพท์จากเครือข่ายอื่นๆ (เช่น โวดาโฟน, ออเรนจ์, โอทู, เวอร์จินโมบายล์, ทรี ฯลฯ) ได้ตลอดทั้งวันโดยไม่เสียค่าใช้จ่ายใดๆ หากโทรเกินก็จะมีค่าใช้จ่ายเพิ่มเติมในราคาค่อนข้างสูง โดยเฉพาะเมื่อโทรออกนอกเครือข่าย (เช่น โอทู โทรหา ออเรนจ์)
ราคาตัวเครื่องมือถือจะถูกลงตามอัตราค่าบริการรายเดือนที่สูงขึ้น แต่ส่วนใหญ่ทางบริษัทมักไม่คิดค่าตัวเครื่องเพราะว่าสัญญาบางตัว นั้นยาวพอที่บริษัทจะได้ทุนและกำไรคืนจากค่าบริการรายเดือนทั้งหมดที่ท่านกำลังจะจ่ายไป เมื่อสัญญาสิ้นสุดท่านก็จะได้รับสิทธิเป็นเจ้าของตัวเครื่อง
บริการระบบเติมเงิน
นักศึกษาปริญญาโทหรือนักเรียนแลกเปลี่ยนที่จะศึกษาที่นี่เพียง 1 ปีหรือน้อยกว่านั้น หรือท่านที่ใช้โทรศัพท์ไม่มากนัก โทรศัพท์แบบเติมเงิน (pay-as-you-go) คงเป็นทางเลือกที่เหมาะสมกว่า ผู้ใช้จะเสียค่าโทรศัพท์คิดเป็นนาทีตามจริงและสามารถควบคุมปริมาณการโทรเองได้ การเติมเงินก็ทำได้สะดวกเช่นผ่านทางบริการออนไลน์ ผ่านตัวเครื่อง หรือ ผ่านบัตรเติมเงิน แต่ท่านจะต้องเสียเงินซื้อเครื่องโทรศัพท์เองสำหรับตัวเลือกระบบอันนี้ ดังนั้นหากท่านอยากจะประหยัดก็ควรนำโทรศัพท์มาจากประเทศไทยเอง และควรตรวจสอบให้แน่ใจด้วยว่าตัวเครื่องอันนั้นสามารถรับครื่นสัญญาณได้อย่างน้อยสองความถี่ (duo band)
ในการเปิดบริการโทรศัพท์ระบบรายเดือนนั้น ท่านต้องไปที่ศูนย์จำหน่ายโทรศัพท์ของเครือข่ายที่มีโปรโมชั่นที่ตอบสนองความต้องการของท่าน เช่น โวดาโฟน หรือ ออเรนจ์ พร้อมกับเอกสารรับรองสถานะทางการเงิน (bank statement) ใบแจ้งค่าสาธารณูปโภค และเอกสารประจำตัว (หนังสือเดินทาง หรือ ใบอนุญาตขับขี่ของประเทศอังกฤษ) การอนุมัติสัญญาขึ้นอยู่กับหลายปัจจัยด้วยกัน ไม่ว่าจะเป็น อันดับความน่าเชื่อถือของท่าน หรือ จำนวนระยะเวลาที่อยู่ในสหราชอาณาจักร
สำหรับบริการระบบเติมเงิน คุณเพียงแค่ซื้อโทรศัพท์ที่มาพร้อมกับซิมการ์ดของระบบจากเครือค่ายใดๆก็ได้เท่านั้นก็เป็นอันเสร็จเรียบร้อย หรืออย่างที่เกริ่นไว้คุณยังสามารถเลือกซื้อซิมการ์ดแยกเพียงอันเดียวจากร้านค้าหรือผ่านทางอินเตอร์เน็ต (ซึ่งบางครั้งก็แจกฟรี)
อย่างไรก็ตาม คุณควรหาข้อมูลให้มาก เพื่อให้ได้ข้อเสนอที่คุ้มค่าและเหมาะสมกับการใช้งานโทรศัพท์ของคุณมากที่สุด
